Asbury Park, NJ -- Today, the New Jersey Sierra Club announced its endorsement of Senator Bob Menendez’s campaign for reelection to the U.S. Senate.
“Bob Menendez is a proven, steadfast environmental champion, fighting to protect the health of New Jersey’s environment and the well-being of New Jersey families,” said Richard Isaac, New Jersey Sierra Club Political Chair. “New Jersey needs a fighter in the Senate who will stand up to Donald Trump’s attacks on our clean air, clean water, our oceans and our beaches. From protecting our coasts and coastal communities from dangerous drilling to defending life-saving climate protections to working to create good-paying clean energy jobs, Bob Menendez stands with Garden Staters and will stand up to Trump and the corporate polluters.”
In the Senate, Menendez has consistently voted to protect and enhance clean air and water safeguards, worked to block offshore drilling, and has pushed for significant investments in clean, renewable energy by backing investments in wind and solar energy while fighting tax breaks for big oil companies.
With New Jersey recently approving the nation’s toughest offshore drilling ban and Congressional Republicans clamoring to pass legislation to undermine such bans, Menendez’s leadership to fight offshore drilling will be more important than ever. Menendez has helped lead the fight to push back against Trump’s plans to drill off of New Jersey’s coasts.
“I have worked my entire career in public service driving policies to preserve and protect our environment, to ensure we have clean water to drink and clean air to breathe, that our homes and pipes are free of lead, that polluters are held accountable for the damage they cause, and that our pristine shoreline and natural resources remain the birthright of all New Jerseyans for generations to come. With the Trump Administration’s constant assault on our environment, this election has never mattered more,” said Sen. Menendez. “I am proud to have the Sierra Club as a key partner in that fight, to promote environmental conservation and sustainability, and to combat Donald Trump’s dangerous rollback of environmental protections that threaten the health and safety of every New Jerseyan. Because, when our environment is healthy, our families are healthier, communities are better off, and our economy is stronger.”
In addition, Menendez has worked to secure funding to protect and conserve the New Jersey Highlands through consistent support of the Highlands Conservation Act, consistently worked to preserve the Arctic refuge, and voted to stop Trump’s extreme nominees and rollbacks of life-saving clean air and water protections.
