WASHINGTON, D.C. -- This week, the US Senate approved its first funding package of the year, a package of 3 funding bills that includes Energy and Water Appropriations bill. Compared to the House passed 3-funding bill minibus last week, the Senate package is largely free from new anti-environmental poison pill riders.
In response, Sierra Club Deputy Legislative Director Christine Hill released the following statement:
"We applaud Senate Democratic leadership and Senators Schumer and Leahy for their work in fighting for a funding package that aims to protects our kids’ health and safeguards America’s outdoors without new poison pill policies that sell out future generations to corporate polluters. The appropriations process is designed to fund the federal government, and hijacking it to score political points for corporate polluters is a clear violation of Congressional norms and sets a terrible precedent. For too long, Republicans in Congress have tried to push dangerous riders that threaten our kids and sell out our clean air and water to corporate polluters. These riders have no place in a funding package meant to fund programs that protect families and communities. We are glad to see that Senate Democratic leadership is leading the charge in ensuring families are protected first."
