WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Senate today passed a bi-partisan Farm Bill. Despite attempts to attach unpopular anti-environmental riders, the final bill remains focused on widely-supported food and farm policies.

In response, Jordan Giaconia, Sierra Club federal policy associate, issued the following statement.

“We’re pleased the Senate has passed a forward-looking bill to secure the future of farming and wildlands in our country. This legislation rightly focuses on supporting healthy lands, water, wildlife and rural communities while largely avoiding controversial provisions that would spell disaster for our national forests, wildlife, and clean water.

“It’s refreshing to see the public interest put first for a change. We hope the House will do likewise and abandon plans to cut off food assistance, log away our forests, roll back endangered species protections, and make it easier for polluters to contaminate our drinking water with pesticides. For the good of the country, the House should pass the Senate version of the Farm Bill.”
