WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the Sierra Club is mobilizing its members across the country to attend the March for the Ocean. In Washington DC, and around the country, the March for the Ocean Campaign is mounting mass marches, flotillas and rallies, calling for a stop to offshore drilling that threatens our ocean and coastlines and action to protect coastal communities, protect the ocean, and secure clean water for all.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
“Many politicians seem determined not to learn from history, whether that be the BP disaster in the Gulf Coast, other devastating spills along our precious coastlines, or the constant threat pollution and drilling poses to coastal communities, our economies, and fragile natural habitats. We can not sell out our coastal communities, our climate, and the ocean just to please corporate polluters because when we safeguard a healthy ocean, we are acting to safeguard the strength of our planet and the health of the public. That’s why the Sierra Club is proud to support the March for the Ocean and join in marches and rallies all over the country to rise up and send a loud and clear message: protect our oceans now.”
