Yesterday, Congressman John Sarbanes and 161 Democratic co-sponsors introduced the By The People Resolution, which aims to reform our democracy by combating corruption and promoting pro-voter solutions.
To highlight just a few goals of the Resolution, it seeks to:
Promote national automatic voter registration;
Restore the integrity of the Voting Rights Act;
Empowering small donors and diminishing the influence of big-money campaign donors
Amend the Constitution to reassert Congress’ authority to regulate political spending and overturn the Citizens United ruling; and
Prevent foreign interference in our elections.
In response, Sierra Club Democracy Program Director Courtney Hight released the following statement:
“The By The People Resolution is a bold, necessary step in ensuring our nation’s democracy works for the people, not just corporate polluters and the most wealthy. For far too long, the power in our democracy has been funneled upward, becoming increasingly concentrated amongst a small number of elites. Congressman Sarbanes’ resolution is an important step in reversing that trend and securing a democracy that belongs to the many, not the few.”
