Washington, DC--  Last week, President Trump announced the end of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) protections for 90,000 Hondurans living in the country after Hurricane Mitch struck and ravaged their country. Many of these immigrants have been living in the United States for more than two decades. The decision marks yet another one in this administration's escalating and targeted attacks on American immigrants.

In response, Campaign Strategist for Sierra Club’s Responsible Trade Program Anthony Torres released the following statement:

“Climate change has ravaged and uprooted the lives of populations around the world, leaving millions of people without safe shelter and separated from their loved ones. As Americans, we must recognize our responsibility in driving these human-driven disasters and fight to protect the people suffering from our country’s history of carbon emitting and current inaction.

“As an organization, we reaffirm our support for the Temporary Protected Status program, our opposition to deportations that tear apart families and communities, and our support for an equitable and timely pathway to citizenship for all immigrants.

“The Sierra Club is in total solidarity with immigrants threatened by the Trump administration -- the struggles to protect our communities and our environment cannot be separated.”
