Today, the nation’s top environmental organizations released a joint statement pledging opposition to Donald Trump’s NAFTA deal if it prioritizes the interests of polluters over the needs of communities across borders.
To date, the NAFTA talks have ignored most of the environmental concerns that the groups delineated before talks began. The demands include stopping the offshoring of pollution and jobs, supporting a clean energy economy, and shielding environmental policies from industry interference. Unless talks dramatically change course, the resulting deal is likely to further exacerbate pollution, job loss, and the climate crisis.
Sierra Club Responsible Trade Program Director Ben Beachy released the following statement: "The environmental movement is united in our demands to replace NAFTA with a deal that protects workers and the planet, not corporate polluters. NAFTA has helped corporations offshore jobs and pollution, devastating communities across borders. Trump could make matters worse with a climate-denying NAFTA 2.0 that locks in decades of pollution and caters to corporate polluters. But our groups have pledged to rise up together to oppose any deal that prolongs Trump's polluting legacy."
