Colorado City and County Governments Seek to Hold Oil Companies Accountable for Climate Change Costs

Boulder, CO -- Today, Boulder County, the City of Boulder, and San Miguel County filed a lawsuit in Colorado state court to require oil companies Exxon and Suncor to help pay for the heavy costs incurred by these governments to respond to and prepare for the effects of climate change.

In response, Sierra Club Chief Climate Counsel Joanne Spalding released the following statement:

“For too long, oil companies have knowingly profited by selling a product that is driving the climate crisis, and expected communities not only to suffer the effects of climate change, but to pick up the massive tab with their tax dollars. We applaud these governments for taking their responsibility to taxpayers seriously and holding oil companies accountable for the damage they’ve done to Colorado communities and the planet.”
