Bozeman, MT-- Yesterday, the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department announced it will recommend against a grizzly bear trophy hunt this year, at next week’s meeting of the Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission. The bear was recently delisted and is still undergoing critical long-term recovery efforts.
In response, Bonnie Rice of the Sierra Club’s Greater Yellowstone campaign, released the following statement:
"The state of Montana's recommendation to not initiate a grizzly bear hunt this year is the right decision. Montana and other states in the Yellowstone region must show that they can responsibly manage grizzly bears first and foremost.
“Sierra Club applauds the Department’s recommendation and we agree that the focus of grizzly bear management should be on long-term recovery, promoting coexistence and reducing preventable conflicts between bears and people.”
