Washington, DC-- Moments ago, the Senate failed to pass a plan that addresses protection for immigrant youth in the wake of Donald Trump’s termination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and threats to several other U.S. immigrant protections.

In response, Sierra Club Legislative Director Melinda Pierce released the following statement:

“Thanks to Donald Trump’s disgraceful termination of DACA and key Senate Republicans refusal to pass a plan to protect DREAMers, 800,000 people in the United States are at immediate risk of deportation. Donald Trump created this problem, and only a clean passage of the Dream Act will protect these young immigrants, providing opportunities for young people to continue to work and go to school, and improving our communities.

“It’s clear Americans want action on a clean Dream Act with no funding for a wall or destructive infrastructure at the border and no attacks on family migration or diversity visas.

“Make no mistake: Trump ended DACA and critical protections for immigrants. He’s now failed multiple times to advance his inhumane agenda. Yet he continues holding immigrant youth lives for ransom to fund a destructive and cruel border wall that will harm communities and the environment.”
