Washington, DC -- When Donald Trump reversed the rejection of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, he touted his plan to require that the pipeline be built using only American-made steel. The administration quietly dropped the requirement for Keystone just a few months later.
Trump continued to brag for months about the plan, though no formal policy was ever rolled out. Since then, the commitment to American steel has been dropped from his stump speech, and the administration’s recently released infrastructure plan includes nothing about requiring American steel in pipelines, despite its heavy focus on the buildout of oil and gas pipeline infrastructure.
In response, Sierra Club Beyond Dirty Fuels Campaign Associate Director Cathy Collentine released the following statement:
“For Donald Trump, the fossil fuel industry’s desires are the top priority: if they want to build pipelines through our communities and waterways, he wants to give them free rein. If they want to use foreign steel, then he won’t stand in their way. In spite of Trump’s claims, it’s clear that approving Keystone XL and other oil and gas pipelines was only ever about supporting the fossil fuel industry no matter the cost to the American public.”
