Washington, DC -- Today, Donald Trump’s Department of Housing and Urban Development announced that it will block the flood-protection standard promulgated by the Obama administration, which sought to protect Department-backed properties -- including Federal Housing Mortgages -- from repetitive losses caused by flood events.
In response, Sierra Club Legislative Director Melinda Pierce released the following statement:
“The pettiness and cruelty demonstrated by the Trump administration is surpassed only by their shortsightedness. Communities around the country are still trying to rebuild after hurricanes destroyed their homes, their towns, and their lives, yet Trump and his administration are seeking to inflict greater harm by ensuring history repeats itself in flood prone regions. Donald Trump cannot keep his head stuck in the sand while the sea levels continue to rise in our coastal communities, threatening millions of Americans’ homes.”
