CHICAGO, IL -- On Tuesday, Cathy Stepp was named by the Trump administration to lead the Environmental Protection Agency’s regional office in Chicago. Stepp was once the director of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources under Republican Gov. Scott Walker where she built a track record of rolling back environmental regulations.

In response, Sierra Club Illinois Director Jack Darin released the following statement:

"Unfortunately, Cathy Stepp's history of rolling back clean air and water protections in Wisconsin makes her the perfect choice for Scott Pruitt and an administration intent on dismantling the EPA. We will stand with the women and men at EPA who have dedicated their careers to protecting the Great Lakes, our air, and communities, and resist any efforts to undermine their critical work and the protections we all depend on. Governors must respond to this backward Stepp by stepping up their efforts to protect the land, air, and water in our states and shared resources like the Great Lakes. We call on Governor Rauner to stop working with polluters to weaken health protections for our air, and start cracking down on those who would break or roll back our environmental laws to pad their profits."
