Washington, DC -- Today, Politico reported that the Environmental Protection Agency’s Inspector General will establish a “factual record” regarding Scott Pruitt’s meeting with the National Mining Association, investigating whether he violated anti-lobbying laws. Politico’s reporting noted that the IG, which independently audits, investigates, and evaluates the EPA’s actions to prevent and detect waste, fraud, and abuse, may not be able to move swiftly as its office is working on a deluge of other projects.

In response, Sierra Club Legislative Director Melinda Pierce released the following statement:

“Scott Pruitt has flouted nearly every norm, ethic, and responsibility of office since seizing control of the EPA, so it’s no surprise to see that he’s now being investigated for breaking the law. Pruitt is an embarrassment unable to to hide his true allegiances to corporate polluters and those that seek to dismantle the EPA. It’s past time Pruitt resigns and returns to the darkest corners of the fossil fuel industry so a person who believes in protecting Americans’ right to clean air and water can take over.”
