Washington, DC -- Today, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee held a hearing on Puerto Rico’s recovery. Senators peppered the panels with questions about the continuing Whitefish Energy scandal and what’s needed to power the rebuilt grid with clean, renewable energy.

In response, Sierra Club Climate Policy Director Liz Perera released the following statement:

“Today’s hearing further shed light on the scam of a contract Whitefish Energy landed, but Americans are left with more questions than answers. Though panelists were asked, we still don’t know if there were kickbacks for Whitefish’s contract. We still don’t know if political pressure was exerted to ensure friends of the Trump administration received $300 million to do work they weren’t prepared to or capable of fulfilling. And perhaps most importantly, we still don’t know if Donald Trump and his administration will ever act with the urgency expected of it to help fellow Americans access safe drinking water and power their homes. We thank the senators who demanded answers today, and we hope they will hold Donald Trump accountable for the Americans who have been left in the dark.”
