Annapolis, MD -- Today eight Northeastern states and jurisdictions, including Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, Delaware, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington, D.C., announced their plans to share approaches and develop regional policies to enable greater access to clean mobility opportunities, reducing carbon pollution from transportation fuels, creating jobs, and growing their economies. Maryland has been a part of the regional Transportation and Climate Initiative since its formation, and today, has renewed its commitment to finding innovative solutions to our climate crisis.

Transportation is the single largest and fastest growing source of carbon pollution in the U.S.

Maryland is a part of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) along with Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont, which aims to reduce emissions from the Power Sector.

In response, Sierra Club Maryland Chapter Campaign and Policy Director David Smedick released the following statement:

“The Sierra Club is excited for the clean air and jobs benefits that come from increasing access to clean energy and more transportation choices. Maryland and our Northeastern neighbors already have a proven bipartisan model to reduce climate-disrupting pollution and improve an energy system, the successful and popular Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. As Maryland and other Northeast state officials continue to lead on climate protection they should apply lessons learned from RGGI to implement policies that limit pollution from transportation fuels while investing in clean mobility for our families, businesses, and communities.”
