Sierra Club Statement on Las Vegas Shooting

OAKLAND, CA -- Last night, the worst mass shooting in modern American history occurred at a music festival in Las Vegas, Nevada. At least 59 people were killed and more than 500 were wounded. The Sierra Club is with all who were affected by this terrible act.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

"The Sierra Club joins those around the nation and the globe in mourning those lost in this devastating tragedy and in commemorating the heroism of those who stepped forward to respond. The toll of what is now the gravest mass shooting in modern American history is staggering and compounded by the fact that it comes so closely after the previous worse incident in our history. Hatred and gun violence have threatened our communities and our country for far too long. We join the overwhelming majority of the public that knows we cannot and should not become numb to violence that could be prevented with simple, common sense gun control measures.”
