Trump Denies Climate Science While Visiting Irma Victims

Changes Tune on Size of Storms

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- While visiting Florida, in response to a question about whether the severity of recent Hurricanes had changed Donald Trump’s thoughts at all about climate change, Trump responded, “we’ve had bigger storms.”

Previously, over the past few weeks, Trump has referred to both Hurricane Irma and Harvey in “epic” terms and noted their historic nature and unprecedented character.

In response, Michael Brune, Executive Director of the Sierra Club released the following statement:

“Science shows that the climate crisis makes hurricanes like these more devastating, and Donald Trump’s refusal to recognize that is an abdication of responsibility toward the families across this country he is supposed to protect. Thousands of lives have been shattered by storms of a historic magnitude that Trump once trumpeted but now shrugs off when it’s not aligned with the anti-science propaganda pushed by his corporate polluter friends.

“What communities in the Gulf Coast, Southeast, and Puerto Rico need is a recovery led by a President that leaves no one behind and rebuilds with recognition of the very real threats the climate crisis poses. Instead, what they’re getting is an ignorant showman who is lying to their faces. What’s clear is Trump never got it. What’s worse is he doesn’t care.”
