WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Donald Trump took steps to attempt to break up families across the country with increased deportation raids targeting long-term residents, attacks on sanctuary cities, Muslims, and refugees and an effort to wall off the United States (at U.S. taxpayer expense).

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

"Donald Trump’s attempt to tear apart immigrant families and his scheme to wall off our country are un-American. He has not been in office for a week, but Trump is already careening down a dangerous path ruled by fear and greed.

“Like a hotel with his name in gold above the door, Trump’s Mexican border wall would be an ugly monument to his ego. It will cost billions in U.S. taxpayer dollars, while causing flooding, and harm to border communities and wildlife. The plot to target immigrant families would shatter lives and shred the fabric of this country. It is an attempt to undo local efforts to protect our friends, our neighbors, our colleagues, our families, and ourselves that will force millions to live in fear.

“The Sierra Club is in total solidarity with immigrants, communities of color, Muslims, women, and all those who may be threatened under a Trump administration. The struggles to protect our communities and our environment cannot be separated, and everyone who values the principles of liberty, freedom, and justice should continue to resist these attacks."
