WASHINGTON, D.C. -- According to news reports, President-elect Donald Trump plans to nominate former Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue as the head of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  In addition to farming, agriculture, and food programs, the U.S.D.A. is responsible for the nation’s forests, including the U.S. Forest Service.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

“Mr. Perdue’s record of looking after his own, ties to big agribusiness, and denial of climate science is at odds with the tremendous responsibility to all Americans that comes with leading the Department of Agriculture. The national forests and grasslands overseen by the U.S.D.A. draw millions of visitors each year. Their wildlife, clean water and scenery are a crucial piece of the outdoor economy. It’s vital to have someone at the helm that can manage our forests for the future so all families can continue to enjoy them-- not open them to drilling, logging, fracking or other self-serving interests driven by crony capitalism.

"We encourage Senators, who are elected to represent and protect the American people, to stand up for families across the nation and oppose this nomination.”
