WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today marks the inauguration of the 45th President of the United States.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

"For people all over the country and the world, the pain, anger and fear tied to this day are very real. Before this President even took office, he has singled out and attacked people of color, Muslims, immigrants, women, the disabled, and military and civil rights heroes. That’s a huge part of the reason why he is entering office as the least-popular President elect in modern history -- and why thousands upon thousands of Americans will be taking to the streets to begin the resistance to denial, division, and hate.

“This President clearly has no mandate. If and when he and his administration try to undermine climate action, assault our democracy, or attack the people and places we love, he will face a wall of organized people who will fight him in the courts, in Congress, in the marketplace, in the states, and in the streets.

There is so much that this President can't change: he can't change the fact that cities, states, and the international community are acting to tackle the climate crisis. He can't change the fact that the clean energy economy is creating jobs and growth from coast to coast and in between. He can't change the fact that grassroots activists are retiring coal plants and pushing for the transition to clean energy at a record pace. And he can't change the fact that the bonds between movements and communities that will resist his attacks on our families and our values are only growing stronger by the day.”
