WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources is holding a hearing to examine the nomination of former Texas Governor Rick Perry to be President-elect Donald Trump’s head of the U.S. Department of Energy.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

"Looking beyond the irony of Governor Perry leading an agency he once couldn’t remember by name, Perry’s clear financial interests in major energy projects like the Dakota Access pipeline make it obvious that there’s no way he could manage the Department of Energy’s activities impartially. His ideological obsession with promoting dirty fossil fuels and ignoring the climate crisis means he is wholly unfit to lead the very agency he wants to eliminate. We hope Senators at today’s hearing can remember Governor Perry’s fossil fuel ties better than he can remember the DOE’s name and recognize that they should oppose this appointment.”
