AUSTIN, TX - American Electric Power (AEP) announced today that it would make a $4.5 billion investment in the nation’s largest wind energy project, the Wind Catcher Energy Connection. The wind energy project is under construction currently in Oklahoma’s western panhandle. The wind farm will power AEP’s customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas, and is expected to save customers $7 billion over the next 25 years.
In response to today’s news, Al Armendariz, deputy director of the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign, released the following statement:
"We applaud AEP's investment in the historic Wind Catcher Energy Connection wind farm in Oklahoma's panhandle. The Wind Catcher project is expected to power millions of homes and businesses while saving customers across Oklahoma and the Gulf region billions of dollars. We see this investment in Oklahoma’s future as further evidence that wind is simply a better deal for customers than dirty fuels like coal and gas.”
