Washington, DC -- Today it was announced that Donald Trump’s chief strategist, Steve Bannon, will be leaving the administration.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
“Good riddance to Steve Bannon, as his disgraceful brand of hate and vitriol deserves no place in the White House. Yet, no one should forget that it was Donald Trump who enabled Bannon. After all, it was Trump who ran a campaign filled with violence, hate, and racism. It was Trump who has ultimately made the hateful and destructive decisions of this Administration, from siding with nazis and white supremacists after Charlottesville, to pushing a Muslim Ban, to withdrawing from the Paris Agreement. And, it was Trump who allowed Bannon to sit in the Oval Office at his side for seven months. No one should be surprised days, hours, or minutes from now when Donald Trump reminds the world that his dangerous, hateful, divisive agenda will continue unabated, as it has little to do with Steve Bannon and everything to do with Trump himself. The presidency should serve as a moral compass that helps guide our country to be more united, inclusive, and equitable. Donald Trump not only shuns this responsibility, he has and continues to spit in its face.”
