WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, hundreds of Sierra Club members and supporters took to the streets for Women’s Marches across the country. About 400 Sierra Club supporters joined the Washington, D.C. march and Sierra Club chapters joined more than 50 sister marches across 25 states. The Sierra Club is an official partner of the Women’s March on Washington. This year, the Sierra Club is breaking ground as the first major national environmental organization to have a gender equity program.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

"With each passing tweet and statement Trump makes bearing a new insult to marginalized communities, Trump's administration has proven itself to be a threat to women, immigrants, workers, LGBTQ rights, clean air and water, climate safeguards, and so many other people and places. It's more important than ever to show that our diverse movement is united for the protection of our rights and the health and safety of our communities and families. That's why the Sierra Club is proud to join the Women’s March on Washington and sister marches around the country. Together with so many people from across the country, our collective and diverse presence is too great to ignore.

“Women’s rights are human rights, and key human rights are the ability to breathe clean air, drink clean water and live in a safe climate. Research shows that women bear the disproportionate burden of extreme weather, pollution and climate disruption, so it’s clear we can’t have climate justice without gender justice. Gender equity is vital to everyone’s ability to thrive in the face of climate disruption.”
