WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced that he will uphold the standard for Supreme Court nominees requiring Judge Neil Gorsuch to receive 60 votes in order for his confirmation to advance.

In response, Sierra Club Democracy Program Director Courtney Hight released the following statement:

“Senator Schumer is absolutely right to ensure that the Senate maintains the long-standing requirement that a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court should only advance when 60 Senators agree. That’s especially important today, as there are so many questions surrounding Judge Gorsuch’s nomination, from the ongoing investigation into Russia’s involvement in the Presidential election to the nominee’s refusal to answer numerous questions about his own judicial philosophy. These questions should be answered, and adhering to the 60 vote standard is an important way to try and ensure they are.”
