Albany -- On Wednesday, Governor Cuomo is expected to announce plans to install over 500 electric-vehicle (EV) charging stations, 500 at New York workplaces and 69 along the New York State Thruway, as a part of his State of the State agenda.

The Governor previously announced a goal of 3,000 charging stations by 2018 through the ChargeNY program. This announcement is a step toward meeting that goal, but more work is needed this year.

In response, New York Sierra Club Electric Vehicles Initiative Organizer Kat Fisher released the following statement:

"Expanding New York’s electric vehicle charging network will give New Yorkers more opportunities to participate in the drive to clean up the state’s transportation sector. Encouraging the rapid transition to electric vehicles is an all-around win for our climate, our public health, and our economy. Electric vehicles are already cleaner than gasoline-powered vehicles, but coupled with New York’s transition to renewable power, electric vehicles can begin to bring us into a 100 percent clean transportation system as we move forward. Governor Cuomo’s continued commitment to increase accessibility to electric vehicle charging on our highways and at our  homes and workplaces will help speed our transition to a 21st century clean transportation system.”
