Albany -- On Thursday, Consolidated Edison (Con-Ed) issued a request for information (RFI) for a $25 million investment with additional third-party funding, focused on electric vehicle (EV) charging station installations (including curbside in New York City), off-peak rate EV charging design for customers, and government EV fleet transition (delivery vehicles, car-sharing programs, etc.). All of these initiatives will be accompanied by a robust marketing strategy for Con-Ed’s customers.

In response, Sierra Club New York Electric Vehicles Initiative Organizer Kat Fisher released the following statement:

“New York’s transportation sector is the state’s largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Electrifying New York’s vehicles will not only reduce the effects of climate change, but will also help protect New Yorkers’ public health by reducing dangerous tailpipe pollutants, providing safer air, and reduced healthcare costs. When electric vehicle charging is powered by clean wind and solar energy,  it provides even more economic benefits by creating jobs, lowering electricity rates and reducing the billions of dollars New York sends out-of-state every year for dirty transportation fuels. Con-Ed’s Request for Information is a laudable first step in the effort, and they have put themselves in the lead to be a model for the rest of the utilities in New York. The Sierra Club urges all of New York’s utilities to propose similar initiatives to do their part to help ensure the Empire State is on the firm path forward to lower emissions 40 percent sector wide by 2030.”
