CARSON CITY, NEVADA -- Today, the Nevada Senate passed Assembly Bill 206 to increase the state's renewable portfolio standard (RPS) to 40 percent by 2030. Shortly after, the Assembly passed the amended bill in a concurring vote that sends it to Governor Sandoval’s desk to be signed into law.

Although an amendment in the Senate Commerce, Labor, and Energy Committee lowered the standard as written in the initial bill, this is a big bipartisan step toward a clean energy future in Nevada.

The passage of this bill is especially important after the White House abandoned the Paris Agreement, ceding U.S. leadership in the clean energy economy. Nevada is moving forward to take advantage of its vast solar, wind, and geothermal potential to create new jobs, lower utility bills, and end the fossil fuel pollution that endangers our air and water.

Elspeth DiMarzio, Sierra Club’s Campaign Representative in Nevada, issued the following statement:

“As the White House steps aside from its leadership role in the growing clean energy economy, the Nevada legislature stepped up by passing AB206 to commit to harnessing our state’s vast renewable energy potential. This bipartisan commitment to renewable energy is the smart move for attracting investment and creating jobs, securing reliable and affordable energy, and ensuring future generations have clean air and clean water. Nevadans now look to Governor Sandoval to sign this bill into law and secure the state’s role as a national clean energy leader."
