Phoenix, AZ -- Sierra Club organizers and community members will host an event with outdoor retail giant REI in efforts to fight back against a Trump-ordered review of some of Arizona’s national monuments -- Ironwood Forest, Sonoran Desert, and Vermilion Cliffs. The event will draw speakers from multiple public lands advocacy groups and Arizona residents who will stress the importance of public lands protections for the state’s economy, wildlife and residents.
The public lands event comes just days before Zinke’s final monument recommendation, which had put four of Arizona’s national monuments on the chopping block -- Grand Canyon- Parahsant has since been removed from the list. Zinke has already proposed stripping in size Bears Ears National Monument in Utah and signaling intentions to do the same in multiple other states.
