Denver, Colo. -- Today, Denver Mayor Michael Hancock concluded his State of the City address by issuing a bold vision for powering Denver with 100 percent clean, renewable energy like wind and solar. Mayor Hancock’s endorsement represents a significant first step towards Denver ultimately adopting a goal of transitioning to 100 percent clean, renewable energy.
“We have fought too hard to establish Denver as an environmental and sustainability leader. If Washington won’t stand by the Clean Power Plan or Paris Climate Accord, we will. We will reduce our carbon footprint and find a way to make Denver 100 percent renewable,” said Mayor Hancock.
Mayoral endorsements of 100 percent renewable energy have led to ambitious action in municipalities across the United States. More than 130 mayors across the United States have issued proclamations or announced their support for a goal of transitioning to 100 percent clean and renewable energy. In cities like Columbia, South Carolina and St. Petersburg, Florida, the goal of 100 percent clean energy was subsequently adopted city-wide following mayoral proclamations laying out a vision for a full clean energy transition.
37 U.S. cities have now committed to transition entirely to clean and renewable energy. At least five cities, including Aspen, have already achieved the goal of moving to 100 percent clean, renewable energy.
“This is a big step forward for Denver and Colorado. Denver residents will continue to build the grassroots momentum needed to achieve 100 percent clean and renewable energy. Together, we look forward to working with the City and community groups to assure that voices from all Denver communities are represented in this incredible opportunity,” said Jim Alexee, Director of the Sierra Club’s Colorado chapter.
