Sacramento, CA -- Today, the California State Lands Commission announced that will begin the process of decommissioning Platform Holly, an oil and gas infrastructure in the Pacific Ocean.

The news comes as Secretary of the Interior, Ryan Zinke, is set to give a speech in Santa Barbara amid speculation that the Trump administration is planning on opening up offshore drilling operations in previously banned waters.

In response, Sierra Club California Director Kathryn Phillips released the following statement:

“Today is a great day for California’s coast and ocean ecosystem. The decommissioning of Platform Holly continues to prove that California is leading by example when it comes to transitioning away from dirty fuels onto clean, renewable energy.

“Regardless of what he may claim, Donald Trump will never successfully force offshore drilling on our waters. Californians have spoken and will continue to be heard when it comes to the safety and security of our clean air and water.”
