Salt Lake City, Utah -- More than 2.5 million comments have been collected in support of national monuments as part of a “review” initiated by the Trump administration. Led by Interior Secretary Zinke, the intent of the review is to undermine and rollback protections for some of the country’s most beloved public lands. Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante were among the national monuments targeted by the review.
In response Kim Carson, Summit County Vice Chair issued the following response:
"Summit County is proud of its Federal Lands and is committed to working collaboratively with our Federal Lands Managers. We value the National Forests here in Summit County, and like other public lands, like national monuments, they not only provide recreational opportunities for a multitude of users but are significant economic drivers. Federal Lands throughout Utah provide a unique experience valued by Utahns and visitors, enhancing the Utah experience for both employers and our tourism economy. Our citizens spoke overwhelmingly in support of protecting our Federal Lands for all Americans and in response, we are proud to have passed a public lands resolution. We now look to Secretary Zinke to listen to the millions of voices speaking in favor of protecting Utah’s sacred and beloved lands.”
