Lopez (North America), Uroš Macerl (Europe), Prafulla Samantara (Asia), Wendy Bowman (Islands and Island Nations), Rodrigo Tot (South and Central America), and Rodrigue Katembo (Africa).
The award, presented to six recipients annually, “recognizes individuals for sustained and significant efforts to protect and enhance the natural environment, often at great personal risk.” The winners received their awards at a ceremony yesterday evening in San Francisco and will attend a ceremony in Washington, D.C. tomorrow.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
"Our sincerest congratulations to this year’s six Goldman Environmental Prize winners, each of whom has shown tremendous courage and resolve in fighting to protect their communities and environment in the face of seemingly insurmountable adversity. It is no small feat to take on these environmentally destructive projects and win, and we continue to be inspired by the Prize’s courageous and passionate winners.”
