The Sierra Club is proud to endorse Patty Kim, Democratic incumbent for Pennsylvania House District 103 in the upcoming General Election on Tuesday, November 3rd, 2020.
Patty is running for a fifth term. She has a proven track record in supporting environmental issues that are important to the Sierra Club and her constituents. She represents many communities of color, including Blacks, Latinos, and Asian Americans.
Two years ago, the Sierra Club endorsed Patty for her commitment to increase renewable energy as one way to abate climate change. Given that the federal government is rescinding regulations protecting our air, water and public lands, it is more important than ever to elect an environmental champion like Patty. She is working to protect public health and ensure safe and healthy communities that are free of toxic air and water pollution. Further, Patty strongly believes that clean drinking water is one of her constituents’ most basic rights.
Activists are working hard to create more community gardens and farmers' markets. Patty has provided a platform for local community leaders who are also educating families that healthy foods can be affordable and delicious.
Parts of her urban district are a food desert. Certain neighborhoods lack access to supermarkets or nutritious foods. What is available to them are fast food restaurants and corner stores that have few healthy options. This has a negative impact on the health of many families.
Patty assisted the Borough of Steelton to renovate its 45-year-old water plant, which had water registering high levels of bacteria. After bringing the Department of Environmental Protection and the borough’s water authority together, the borough was able to qualify for loan through PennVest, a special state program which assists with water and sewer infrastructure projects. As a result, the outdated water system was improved and residents are no longer afraid to drink the water.
Patty has also championed measures to increase the minimum wage and to provide job-search assistance to people who were recently released from prison.
We strongly encourage all Sierra Club members, as well as their friends, neighbors and relatives to support her campaign so that we can secure a General Assembly that will protect our environment.
