Sierra Club’s Election Round-Up

The Congressional election results in New Jersey have showed that all of the Sierra Club’s endorsed candidates have won, including all the incumbents endorsed. We believe these representatives have made tremendous efforts to help protect New Jersey’s air water and land and we are glad they have been re-elected. Other environmental victories include two local elections where offshore drilling opponent, John Weber was elected to the Bradley Beach Town Council. Anti-pipeline advocates Andrea Katz and Rita Romeu were elected to the Chesterfield Township committee.

“It is important that all of our environmental champions have returned to Congress. Rep. Norcross, Rep. Watson Coleman, Rep. Pallone, and Rep Pascrell have won re-election. These representatives will stand up to future rollbacks on environmental protections in the Trump Administration. They help block dirty energy proposals, while fighting against attacks on clean water and clean energy. Josh Gottheimer won a huge victory in the 5th Congressional District against incumbent Scott Garrett who had one of the worst records for the environment in Congress. There were also many local victories in the Chesterfield and Bradley Beach's Councils with environmental advocates being elected,” said Jeff Tittel, Director of the New Jersey Sierra Club.

Hillary Clinton won New Jersey by 13 points and 459, 583 votes.

Josh Gottheimer knocked off the Tea-Party incumbent Scott Garrett in the 5th Congressional District. Scott Garrett had one of the worst records on the environment in Congress and served since 2003. We are confident Josh will be a strong leader for the environment in Congress by taking on issues like protecting clean water, fighting climate change, and improving our transportation infrastructure.

Congressman Norcross was re-elected to New Jersey’s 5th Congressional District. His efforts will continue as a leader on wind and solar and energy efficiency, and reducing climate change impacts.

Congresswoman Watson Coleman can continue protecting open space, promoting renewable energy, while blocking dirty fuels in New Jersey's 12th Congressional District .

Congressman Pallone was re-elected to New Jersey’s 6th Congressional District. We are proud that he will continue to be an environmental champion by blocking offshore drilling, fighting for full clean-ups of Superfund Sites, and protecting clean water.

Congressman Pascrell can continue fighting to protect public lands and our National Parks in the 9th Congressional District.

Andrea Katz and Rita Romeu were elected to Chesterfield Township committee. Andrea and Rita have fought against a proposed New Jersey Natural Gas pipeline through the U.N. Biosphere Pinelands National Reserve and Chesterfield Compressor Station proposals. They will continue to work hard to stop these dangerous and destructive projects from moving forward.

John Weber has won a seat on Bradley Beach Borough’s Town Council. John has been a strong advocate for the environment and opponent of offshore drilling throughout his professional career. He is also the first Democratic Councilman to be elected to the Bradley Beach Town Council.

Voters approved a dedication of gas tax revenue to transportation projects for the Transportation Trust Fund.

We have good news and bad news. With Trump winning, Governor Chris Christie should leave early because he is the head of the Trump Administration’s Transition Team. Unfortunately, what is a win for New Jersey is a loss for the country.
