Groups

Grassroots Action, Powerful Reach. Local Groups serve smaller geographic areas within the state. Each group carries out the Sierra Club’s mission at the grassroots level. Some of the activities may include promoting conservation, developing campaigns, organizing outings, educating and engaging members, endorsing local political candidates. They hold regular meetings that may have a range of topics from education to engagement to just plain fun. Local Groups are a great way to get to know the activists who live near you, and engage powerfully in the local issues that matter. Each Group also appoints a delegate to represent the interests of the Group on the Chapter Executive Committee.

Youth Committee

The Youth Committee was founded about 2 years ago and the current Co-Chairs are Syona Gupta and Shirin Sood. They lead the team of about 8 dedicated highschool students from across the state on various projects. Their most recent project has been working with the Green Amendment policy and understanding the Environmental Justice perspective with this issue. They are also closely working with the Offshore Wind Committee to gain more youth in that movement. In the past the committee has worked on analyzing NJ legislatures, transportation projects, and also working with other personal projects the team wants to work on such a writing articles for the Sierran. Students also come to us with other projects they want to pursue with the committee including an Environmental Justice inspired children's book. The committee has been working with it's members to continue working on tangible projects to help educate each other and encourage other youths to participate in this movement!

Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO)

Our motto is “No Child Left Inside.” NJ ICO is dedicated to providing safe and fun wilderness trips for children and teens who otherwise would have limited access to the outdoors. Volunteer leaders collaborate with community partners to facilitate, lead and promote events that will educate and foster a love of nature and the outdoors for these young people. Our program works to reduce barriers by providing gear, transportation and trip fees. Our leaders create opportunities to explore, enjoy, and advocate for nature.
