Today President Obama has vetoed the Keystone XL Pipeline. The New Jersey Sierra Club Director Jeff Tittel released the following statement:

"We applaud President Obama for standing up to Big Oil and polluters and rejecting the Keystone XL Pipeline. Governor Christie has come out in support of the Keystone XL and other pipelines. The Keystone XL Pipeline would have cut an ugly scar through the middle of America. It would have accelerated climate change, damaged the environment, and threaten the water supply. President Obama's veto shows that he has been listening to the thousands of people over the years who have marched the streets of New York City, rallied in the bitter cold in Washington DC, and have blocked the Keystone XL Pipeline path with renewable energy."

"President Obama has stayed true to his promise that he would not approve this project if it increased climate change. However, there are other proposals that will do the same. We need the President to stand by his words that climate change is the biggest issue we are facing and we need to protect the planet for future generations. The President not only should veto the Keystone XL pipeline, but stop off shore drilling off the Atlantic Coast. Drilling will not only increase carbon emissions, but it will put our coast, economy, and fisheries at risk. The above all energy policy will not get us to where we need to be to protect the environment and combat climate change. We thank President Obama for taking a stand on Keystone XL pipeline and encourage him to continue to stand up for the environment and stop other dangerous projects," said Jeff Tittel, Director of the New Jersey Sierra Club.
