Sierra Club Sad to See Rush Holt Leave Congress
Today Representative Rush Holt announced he will not run for re-election. The Sierra Club New Jersey Chapter issued the following statement in response to the announcement:
"We are devastated that Rush Holt is leaving Congress. Rep. Holt has been an environmentalist and an environmental champion in Congress. He is a longtime Sierra Club member and we are proud that we were the first group to endorse him in 1998, when he was first elected. He has been a hero on so many issues, especially climate change, clean energy, fracking and clean water."

"We have worked closely with Rep. Holt on a number of issues in the local community as well from protecting open space to cleaning up toxic sites. He sponsored the designation of the Lower Delaware River as part of the nation's Wild and Scenic River System, which secured $1 million in funding to study the health and environmental risks of natural gas drilling in the basin. He also sponsored legislation to close loopholes in federal legislation that allow fracking drillers to pollute our environment."
"As a scientist he understands the needs to protect the environment and fight to prevent the impacts of climate change."
"Congressman Holt has fought for both the people of New Jersey and the environment. He has worked hard to advance renewable energy solutions that will create green jobs and prevent oil drilling off our coasts and fracking, while securing millions of dollars in funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund to protect open space and natural resources."
"He is also a leader in energy efficiency. He helped enact the first fuel efficiency standards in 32 years, wrote legislation that was passed in the House to help schools become more energy efficient, and supported a transportation initiative to decrease the amount of fuel wasted through real time traffic monitoring, alternate route planning, and congestion management."
"Rep. Holt has fought to protect the environment from the Delaware River to ANWAR."
"During his 16 years in Congress, Congressman Holt has been a champion on the issues that matter most to the people of New Jersey and has stood up for the protection of our natural resources. We are sad to see him leave. We have lost an environmental hero in Congress. He is someone who cannot be replaced."
