Sierra Club Mourns the Passing of Former Chair Kenneth Johanson

Former NJ Sierra Chapter Chair, Ken Johanson passed away Monday, July 8th.

Kenneth and his wife, Wynn, joined the Sierra Club in 1996. Ken was an integral part of the NJ Sierra Club since 1999. He was Chapter Chair for eleven years, then held chair positions for the  Litigation Oversight, Legislative, and Fundraising Committee. Ken and his wife, Wynn have been active volunteers for the Loantaka Group, fighting for issues ranging from conservation, wildlife protection, renewable energy, and more. Ken’s background as a Harvard-trained attorney proved monumental in advocating for policy and guiding the chapter through litigation.

“He was my mentor, and I learned a lot from him. Ken was pivotal in many ways as a chapter chair, legislative chair, and finance committee member. He did a whole lot and left the chapter in good hands when I became chair. Not only did he have a strong background in law and policy, but he excelled at economics and fundraising. His yearly parties for volunteers and donors were always highly anticipated. We were lucky to have him, and he will be sorely missed,” said Rich Isaac, NJ Chapter Chair of the Sierra Club.

Our condolences go to Ken’s family and wife Wynn. Ken was an environmental stalwart and an incredibly important piece of the NJ Chapter for over two decades. He was a jack of all trades in fighting to protect the environment by using his expertise in law, policy, and fundraising,” said Anjuli Ramos-Busot, NJ Director of the Sierra Club. “Ken was knowledgeable and thoughtful, keeping the chapter in good hands as chair. Even though he is gone, we will continue his work to protect the environment.”
