People before Profit: Reinforcing Opposition to Covanta Incinerator in Camden following Public Hearing
Last night, there was a virtual public hearing about the Covanta Camden waste facility and its proposed improvements from 6-8PM. The New Jersey Sierra Club strongly opposes Covanta Camden Waste Facility as it is one of the dirtiest facilities in the state of New Jersey when it comes to emitting particulate matter and air toxins. New Jersey needs to shut down this toxic garbage incinerator to help protect public health, communities at the frontlines in Camden, and the environment. It's time to put people before pollution and profit. Communities in Camden have a right to clean air and an environment free of toxins.
“Covanta has made some strides in community outreach and beautification but it cannot escape the fact that it is still a waste incinerator processing facility,” said Renée Pollard, New Jersey Sierra Club’s Environmental Justice chair. “When you are using chemicals such as ammonia mixed with other chemicals you are still emitting toxic gasses. Why does it always have to be about the money at the cost of public health, the residents don’t want it there and why should they be the recipients of poor decisions.”
