Governor Murphy has signed Executive Order 118 directing all state parks and forests to close until further notice. The order goes into effect at 8pm on Tuesday, April 7, 2020. This closure applies to all park lots, grounds, facilities, trails, and playgrounds.
“It is important that Governor Murphy has directed all state parks and forests to close to help limit the spread of coronavirus. We need to be practicing social distancing during these trying, unprecedented times. New Jersey has over fifty protected areas designated as state parks, forests, and recreation areas. Parks and forests like Bull’s Island, Cheesequake State Park, Island Beach, Liberty State Park, Ramapo Mountain are important parts of people’s lives. During the public health emergency, however, it is critical that people stay at home and practice social distancing to protect themselves and their loved ones,” said Jeff Tittel, Director of the New Jersey Sierra Club. “Closing state parks and forests will limit the spread of coronavirus and keep people safe.”
All park entrances and gates will be closed and trail use will be prohibited. New Jersey State Park Police will patrol park areas to ensure that the public is obeying the directives to stay at home and limit the spread of COVID-19.
“During this public health crisis, it is critical for everyone to do their part. The Sierra Club already canceled outings indefinitely two weeks ago. We felt that it was important to practice social distancing given the severity of the outbreak. Closing the state parks and forests in New Jersey is a critical step to keep everyone safe and healthy,” said Jeff Tittel, Director of the New Jersey Sierra Club. “Our beautiful parks are cherished by the residents of New Jersey. They may be closed now, but they will be there in a few months when we can hopefully go enjoy the treasures of New Jersey.”
