Outing Description:

Regenerative agriculture is a "system of farming principles and practices that increases biodiversity, enriches soils, improves watersheds, and enhances ecosystem services." Regenerative practices improve soil health by sinking and storing greenhouse gas emissions in the soil by using increased bio-diversity and cropping, as well as returning livestock to the ground instead of holding livestock in confinement.

This outing will give participants the opportunity to visit a traditional farm transitioning to regenerative agriculture and offer a glimpse of a model of the future farm. Our tour host, Christensen Farms near Lyons, NE, was homesteaded in July 1867 and is managed by Graham and Max Christensen who are the 5th generation of Christensens to farm the same land.

Tour Begins at 9:00 AM at the Farm.

What you will see on the Tour:

  • Adoption of the 6 regenerative principles, and how it looks in practice.
  • Soil Health and Water Conservation focus.  No-till, cover crops, buffer strips on waterways.
  • Increased biodiversity and wildlife habitat.
  • Solar energy powered w/ EV's
  • Non-GMO seed focus w/ chemical reductions.
  • Nutrient Management to eliminate excess leaching from Nitrogen fertilizer.
  • Use of biologicals to feed a living soil.  Differentiating between biologicals and biotechnologies (which are not used on this farm).
  • Use of new technologies to better work within the natural ecosystem vs re-engineering the ecosystem (which this farm is strongly against).
  • Agroforestry experimentation
  • Increased focus on growing for nutrition and food for humans, instead of commodities for fuel and livestock feeding
  • Information on how Farm Bill Programs are used to transition farms towards regenerative agriculture.

Registration cost: $10/person (non-refundable) which includes lunch at the Chatterbox in Tekamah. Lunch will be catered by Chef Anthony Warrior. Anthony dishes up Native American inspired dishes using locally sourced ingredients. Your registration fee will help pay for the lunch. The Chapter will subsidize the rest of the cost.
