July 2022 Sierran News Update

Local Group Map

The White River Group (WRG) has continued to advocate for the 2018 International Energy Efficiency Codes both in Commercial and Residential  Construction through several meetings with the City. The Council passed a somewhat modified Commercial Code in April. The Building Dept. is still reviewing the Residential Code but promises few modifications. Special thanks to our allies at MEEA (Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance) for their technical support and guidance!

We have been involved in a few public events these past few months. Kane Sheek, Springfield organizer, assisted a Drury environmental group, Think Green, in putting on a public forum on the Climate Crisis in April and  gave an excellent program on Sierra Club’s activities. WRG tabled at Springfield's Earth Day Celebration, Drury’s Earth Day and Democratic Days. Our ExCom gathered at a local brew pub recently to bid our beloved  Kane Sheek farewell and good luck in his move to Kansas City. We’ll miss him terribly as he served us in numerous vital functions.

WRG sent 8 people to Lobby Days in April, organized by Myra Scroggs, our Legislative Committee Chair and longtime statehouse watchdog and activist.

Our group has had several outings over the past few months to destinations such as Fellows Lake, the Nathan and Olive  Boone Homestead, and Riverbluff Cave. We are also committed to a monthly stream cleanup along South Creek in Springfield. One of our outing plans for this year includes the adoption of a glade at Shepherd of the Hills State Park.
