Forests and Wildlife

The Minnesota Forest Resources Council (MFRC) has, at last, released its massive study of carbon in our forests. Included is a unique chart showing carbon storage in the forest, beginning in 1850, near the start of the 70 year history of cutting literally all but a tiny handful of our great north woods white pines.

The study also discusses a first ever theoretical, climate-adapted management plan for Minnesota’s working forests, which are intended primarily to provide wood for the forest industries. It includes an extensive life-cycle analysis of carbon storage in products and emissions from the industries.

The Stewards are now poring over this report to summarize the findings of most interest to the Sierra Club. At first look, the study suggests little difference in CO2 release or storage between four different forest management methods, at least until 2050, with the
“no-management” scenario resulting in the highest in-forest carbon stocks.

The Forests and Wildlife Stewards will develop recommendations and contact other environmental groups to chart a strong path to protecting our state’s forests, wildlife, and helping address climate change.
