This week, the Northland utilities Minnesota Power and Dairyland Power withdrew their air permit application for the proposed NTEC fossil gas plant in Superior, signaling a significant setback for the proposed project. This is a major milestone in the fight to end NTEC and an important victory for the Twin Ports community, the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, utility ratepayers across both states, and the climate.
If the utilities decide to move forward with their proposed project, they would need to reapply for and receive a new air permit, as well as a wetlands pollution permit with the Army Corps of Engineers and a loan through the Rural Utility Service program in the USDA to finance construction of the plant. Sierra Club will continue to stand side by side with our partners, the City of Superior and the Fond du Lac Band, in urging our utilities to do the right thing, drop their plans for NTEC, and build the clean energy our communities need.
