The Forests and Wildlife Stewards are supporting the Minnesotans for the Great Outdoors Campaign, which urges passage of an important November 5 general election ballot question endorsed by a large coalition of environmental, wildlife and outdoor recreation organizations.
The ballot question asks:
"Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to protect drinking water sources and the water quality of lakes, rivers, and streams; conserve wildlife habitat and natural areas; improve air quality; and expand access to parks and trails by extending the transfer of proceeds from the state-operated lottery to the environment and natural resources trust fund, and to dedicate the proceeds for these purposes?"
Successful passage of the ballot question requires more “Yes” than “No” votes. Skipped votes are counted as “No” votes.
The reason this question is on the ballot is because the trust fund, which was constitutionally authorized by voters in 1988, is due to expire in 2024. For the trust fund to continue operating, its life must be extended.
The law which put this question on the ballot also reauthorizes state lottery appropriations to the fund, increases the annual amount the fund can spend by 20%, and "expand[s] the number and diversity of recipients who benefit from the environment and natural resources trust fund, especially in communities that have been adversely affected by pollution and environmental degradation."
