A major bill being considered this legislative session is the Ratepayer Protection Act. This would set limits on how utility companies can use customer revenue. For example, the utilities could no longer use customers’ payments to fund lobbying activities and membership in trade associations.
The team is advocating for a “Clean Heat Bill.” Last year, the legislature passed a bill requiring that electricity be generated from 100% clean sources. This proposal would be its equivalent for the gas sector. This is likely to be a long-term issue. There will be an informational hearing in the House; stay tuned.
Two other bills would improve the connection of community solar to the grid and streamline the permit process for rooftop solar so homeowners and businesses may more quickly install and activate panels.
Team members, led by chairperson extraordinaire John Krenn, developed a presentation on the rebates and tax credits available through the Inflation Reduction Act. Members have made this presentation to a number of groups, ranging from neighborhood associations to Best Buy employees. If you know of a group that might be interested, please contact John or Patty.
Finally, the team is keeping an eye on topics in front of the Public Utilities Commission, including the transition from gas to electric and decarbonization plans.
Volunteer activities
The Mankato representatives are lukewarm towards environmental initiatives, at best. Are there members from that area who might be interested in contacting representatives? If so, please let Patty or John know.
The team is looking for phone-bank volunteers. Most banks will be virtual. Contact Patty O’Keefe for more details.
