St. Paul, MN -- The Sierra Club applauds the Minnesota Department of Commerce and Governor Tim Walz for their decision to continue their appeal of the Certificate of Need for Enbridge’s Line 3 tar sands pipeline.
That challenge joins the joint appeal that was filed yesterday by Honor the Earth, the Sierra Club, and the Red Lake and White Earth Bands. The Youth Climate Intervenors and Friends of the Headwaters also plan to file separate appeals.
"The Sierra Club appreciates that the Governor and the Walz-Flanagan administration has listened to its own Department of Commerce's expert analysis and allowed their appeal to continue, and we applaud their decision to re-file," said Sierra Club North Star Chapter Director Margaret Levin.
“Unfortunately, the PUC continues to ignore the reality that Line 3 would pose untenable costs to our climate, Indigenous rights, and clean water -- all to deliver tar sands oil that we don't need. Their bad decision flew in the face of state agencies' recommendations and must be rejected, once and for all.
"Today we are thanking the water protectors, climate activists and youth who made this happen, and Governor Tim Walz and Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan for staying the course. If we stick to our values and follow the science, we can achieve the clean energy future we know is possible."
