Amanda Forero: North Star Sierran Spotlight

Amanda Forero

This month we are spotlighting Amanda Forero.  Amanda is a regular office volunteer and member of our Change and Equity Outreach Team. This team is dedicated to realizing our Equity Statement by changing the chapter internally to become an anti-racist and inclusive organization, and by strengthening our partnerships with organizations working to advance environmental and social justice, to make our advocacy more equitable.

Why did you get involved?
I got involved many years ago, just being a member online. But I just wanted to do a little bit more -- at least helping with something -- because I am very worried about the environment and what are we going to leave to our children. This is my primary concern.

What are you most proud of having been a part of?
I feel like I am doing something. Even just a little bit. By participating and helping here, I feel like I am doing something that I didn’t do before and I hope it helps.

I feel like, especially Latino people, don’t feel as a part of the environmental movement. For me, taking a small step like translating our new ‘Volunteers Wanted’ poster (shown in the above photo) helps make people feel included. I think translation matters because when I see things written in Spanish, in my own language, they have more meaning.

What words of advice do you have for other North Star Sierrans?
Be persistent and persevere, even against all odds and government pressure.

What is your favorite place in Minnesota?
Duluth. I love Duluth - it is such a beautiful place. There is so much to show-off with the green spaces and the majesty of the Lake. For me, just thinking that this is a lake not an ocean is incredible. I really enjoy being in Duluth.
